This project investigated the feasibility of implementing a scheme of incentives to encourage LOTE participation in upper-secondary years.
'Bridges to China' self-assessment materials
Sample performances on summative assessment tasks were rated and annotated in order to provide materials to support (adult) students' self-assessment of task performance.
Classroom Communicative Competence Project
Funded by DEST and Korea Institute of Curriculum and Evaluation (KICE), Seoul.
Phase 1: Elementary School English - involved the development of an in-service course for elementary school English teachers. Self- and peer-assessment instruments which would enable teachers to monitor their English language and pedagogy skills were developed to complement the course teaching materials.
Phase 2: Middle School English - involved the development and trial of an in-service teacher development program for Korean middle school teachers of English.
Project activity was carried out by the LTRC and KICE. The program consists of a set of training materials designed for teachers to work through individually or with their peers, and a peer-observation program.
Australian Language Certificates (ALCs)
Analysis of results of the ALCs (secondary school level) in French, German, Indonesian, Italian and Japanese, and development of performance descriptors, for the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). Development of materials for Indonesian and Japanese programs.
The effectiveness of commencing foreign language study in primary school
This project examined whether students continuing Indonesian from primary school performed better than those studying Indonesian for the first time in secondary school.
The Bilingual Interface project
This project, funded by the Department of Employment, Education, Training and Youth Affairs, examined the relationship between first language development and second language acquisition as students begin learning English in the context of schooling.

The Proficiency Test for Tertiary Exit Students of Japanese (The University of Melbourne)
This test was part of an initiative of the School of Languages at the University to improve the quality of language education. This communicatively-oriented test was designed to assess ability in oral interaction, reading and writing.

Japanese test of teacher proficiency, with reading, writing, listening and speaking components.
